Spread the truth:

An old video from Deoria, Uttar Pradesh shot in 2018 resurfaced on Twitter on 13th April 2020. A twitter user, Neha Rathore tweeted this two minute long video in which a man is tied up by a tree with a saffron cloth over him and is being brutally thrashed by a group of men which was retweeted for more than 1000 times.

Claim: The user claimed that this video was a proof of how Hindu-Muslims treat each other with hatred. The video relied on false communal narrative. The misleading caption said

Translated: “I have downloaded this video from Facebook, if I were male, I would burn these dogs alive. The country is not threatened by Muslims.  The country is at risk from these havoc  Therefore I want to stay away from blind devotees. There is no time to change our government to Hindu-Muslim.”

TRUTH

This same video was viral two years ago (2018) too and was debunked then by SMHoaxSlayer. The it was viral as a Hindu man was beaten by Muslims in West Bengal for hoisting saffron flag on his home.

Was this man beaten in West Bengal for hoisting saffron flag on his house ?

The video does not derive any communal narrative. It is from 2018 and shows a case of flogging in Deoria in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The police had later arrested six people for thrashing the 18-year-old. The victim has asked for the culprits for the money he had landed them. A 31st March, 2018 report from The Indian Express mentions the police stating that one of the accused had to return Rs. 1,500 he had lent.

The report identified the victim’s name as Shamshad. According to the police officer, “Shamshad had lent Rs 1,500 to Nasir two months ago, which the latter had not returned. The duo had quarrelled over the issue and Shamshad had also beaten Nasir for not returning the money. Nasir avenged this beating on Wednesday. Nisar and his friends had lured Shamshad to a deserted field, where they assaulted him.” The case was registered against the accused for dacoity and assault.

There has been a lot of misinformation spreading on social media platforms which relate the coronavirus outbreak to the Muslim community. However, this particular video was going viral with an attempt to throw the Hindu community in bad light.
