Congresses’ Randeep Singh Surjewala posts an old photograph from Nepal as “News India’s Truth”

Indian National Congress party member Randeep Singh Surjewala on 18th May tweeted a picture (deleted later) of a woman cycling while carrying her small child on her back. The image was set amidst the growing reports of migrants from different parts of the country being stranded and unable to get back home amidst the lockdown.

The tweet posted on Randeep Singh Surjewala was taken down without any explanation. The image was captioned in Hindi : “न्यू इंडिया का सच!” which is translated into “New India’s truth.” A screenshot of the tweet  is as follows:

It’s from Nepal, Not India and 8 years old.

A simple Google Reverse Image search showed a series of results that indicated that the image is taken out of context in terms of its geographical location.

According to reports from Times of India, the image was taken on July 3, 2012 by Narendra Shrestha in Nepalgunj and is credited to EPA.

 

 

 

 

 

The image posted to Pinterest showed that it was posted on InfoNews however the link to the article was no more in existence. The caption on the image read: Babywearing mama and child in Nepalgunj, Nepal where bike travel is the usual transportation.”

The image has also been featured in an Instagram competition named “Mums On Bikes” which collected pictures of mothers  carrying their children on bikes. The image featured also credits Pinterest as the source.
