Truth

The viral claim is misleading. Priya Malik won Gold at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary, not at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

With the entire nation optimistic about India’s performance at the Tokyo Olympics, social media users confused Priya’s gold at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship for the Tokyo Olympics.

Wrestler Priya Malik did win a gold medal but not at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She bagged gold at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary, after registering a resounding victory (5-0) against Belarus’ Kseniya Patapovich in the 73kg weight category.

During our investigation, we found a tweet from DD News. In the tweet, DD News congratulated Priya Malik for winning gold in the 73 kg category of the World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary.

Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports also congratulated Priya for bringing laurels to India by bagging gold at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship.
