The terrifying viral video of destruction caused in Dharamshala is actually from Atami, Japan.

On Monday, July 12 2021, a cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district caused flash floods in Dharamshala and other parts of the state. As a result, all social media platforms have been bombarded with horrifying footage and images uploaded by various individuals.

A video of a landslide with gushing water and sludge wrecking havoc has gone viral on social media, with claims that it was triggered by flash floods in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.

TRUTH

The video is of a mudslide in Japan’s Atami city and not from Dharamshala.

This viral video shows a landslide in the Japanese city of Atami on July 3, 2021, that swept away many homes and vehicles, killing two people and leaving several others missing due to heavy rainfall.

We retrieved numerous keyframes from the video by performing  a reverse image search on the video using InVid. This led us to an article on mainstream news website CNN published on July 4, 2021, about the landslide in Atami, Japan.

We also identified several YouTube channels of news outlets such as the Hindustan Times, CBS Evening News and The Sun that had published videos that included the same viral footage as well as additional clips of the same location from various angles as part of a news report .
